Canberra is Australia's capital city. It is located in the Australian Capital Territory or ACT in country New South Wales. Back in the days of federation of the separate sovereign states of Australia into the Commonwealth of Australia, consensus could not be reached whether Melbourne or Sydney should become the capital and the seat of federal government so it was decided that a new city should be planned and built somewhere between the two that would become the capital and ease interstate rivalries. This is how the concept for the city of Canberra was decided. A Mr. Walter Burley Griffin was awarded the task of planning the new city and so Canberra became one of the few city’s in the world that was properly planned before a sod of soil was turned.
The benefit of this planning is evident today when you drive around Canberra. There is much for the tourist to see and do in Canberra. The parliament house building is usually on most tourists agenda and if parliament is sitting, well so much the better. The centerpiece of Burley Griffins design was a huge lake which the city surrounds and it now bears its designers name. On its shores are a number of tourist attractions that most people will want to visit. The old parliament house is one. The National War Museum, The National Art Gallery, The Supreme Court of Australia are others that deserve a visit. There is plenty of quality Canberra accommodation so it is easy to find good Canberra hotels or apartments and there are lots of good restaurants to feed the hordes of politicians, public servants and journalists that frequent the city.
Close to town you will also find some great holiday resorts and there are also a number of really top class golf courses in the region. Canberra has a domestic jet airport and is easily reached from Sydney or Melbourne. It is also the closest jet airport to the Snowy Mountains and the ski resorts of Perisher Valley and Thredbo. Many skiers fly to Canberra and then hire a vehicle and drive themselves to the snow country. Many of the locals like to take the drive to the coast for the weekend and places like Batemans Bay and Bega are popular holiday destinations for Canberra residents.
Any tourist holidaying in Australia should pay a visit to the nation's capital so put Canberra on your travel itinerary.
