The Central Coast region of New South Wales is most famous as a seaside region that boasts many of the states best beaches and a seaside lifestyle that is the envy of its visitors. Gosford is the commercial center and it lies on the beautiful Brisbane Waters, which is an offshoot of the Hawksbury River estuary and it provides one of the best boating and fishing venues on Australia's east coast. Gosford is a large city with a comprehensive commercial center. It also has plenty of accommodation with lots of motels and hotels available. On the western shores of Brisbane Waters are some famous holiday destinations. Woy Woy, Umina, Pearl Beach and Ettalong Beach are great places to stay.
On the coast, the scenery is spectacularly beautiful. High cliffs and headlands separate a procession of wonderful white sand surfing beaches. At the southern end of the Central Coast is the Boudi National Park and spectacular beaches in places like Maitland Bay can only be reached by bushwalking through the park. Beaches like Copacabana and Avoca have their own resident communities and the surfing here is legendary. Terrigal and McMasters beach are the tourist centers. In Terrigal there is a great beachfront shopping area with excellent resort accommodation. There is a protected bay behind a high headland known as the Skillion and fishermen come here to launch their boats for a days fishing. The fish and chips shop at the boat ramp is really popular.
A little further north is the Tuggerah Lakes and they open to the sea at The Entrance which is one of the most popular tourist destinations on the coast. The beaches here are fantastic and the fishing and prawning around the lakes entrance are excellent. There are many other small towns around the lakes that are great to stay at. Toukley, Budgewoi and Wyong all have something to offer and there are some great resorts in the region.
The Central Coast is only an hours drive north of Sydney along a magnificent freeway that now runs all the way north to Newcastle and beyond so the region is really easy to get to. Any holiday in Australia should include a stay in the New South Wales Central Coast region.
