No Australian holiday is complete without a visit to the regions of country New South Wales. These regions range from nearly total desert conditions to rich agricultural regions. In the west of the state the countryside is arid and the only industries are mining. Broken Hill is the largest settlement and even though the mining there is almost stopped the town still has a wonderful frontier like atmosphere and is now heavily dependent on the colony's of artists that have made their homes there. The south western districts of the state are all agricultural. These are mostly grazing and wheat growing regions.

The city of Dubbo is the largest in the region and is a busy commercial hub for the agricultural industries. Dubbo is also home to the Western Plains Zoo which is a range style Zoo with many beautiful exhibits. It is one of the best of its type and well worth visiting. Dubbo has plenty of accommodation at all levels. The southern regions around Wagga Wagga are also primarily agricultural and this is the center of an extensive wool, lamb and beef growing area. North of Dubbo is the town of Coonabarrabran which is located near the Warumbungle ranges. This is the site of Australia's most important astronomical observatories which are located on the top of the ranges themselves.

Region Activities Towns

The northern regions of the state, especially in the west are grain and cotton growing regions. Moree is the largest of these centers and it is the commercial center for a vast agricultural region. Towards the coast is the New England region which is a wool and lamb growing region. It is an extremely beautiful part of the country and the cities of Armidale and Tamworth are here. Armidale has grown into a university and education based city and Tamworth is known as the country music capital of Australia. Every year, the faithful gather in Tamworth for the annual country music awards.

On the border of New South Wales and Victoria lies Albury, it shares the city with it's twin Wodonga (which lies on the Victorian side of the border). Albury is a great city for shopping and dining.

Anyone planning a campervan or motorhome style holiday through Australia, should visit as much of country New South Wales as they can.
