Hinchinbrook Island is one of the most beautiful holiday destinations in far north Queensland. It is Australia's largest island National Park and has regions of rare beauty. It is mostly covered by rainforest and features high mountains, waterfalls and fantastic beaches. The island is a favorite destination for bushwalkers wanting to see one of the country's most scenic regions. The highest point on the island is mt Bowen at 1142 meters. The north face of the island drops 1121 meters in cliffs and rainforested slopes almost right to the shoreline. There are 11 beautiful sandy beaches on the island and many of them are totally secluded. The total are of the island is 39000 hectares. The island is 37.4 kilometers long and 10 kilometers wide and is accessed from Cardwell on the coast, which is about two hours drive south from Cairns or north from Townsville. It is accessible via a regular ferry service to the resort at the northern end.
Hinchinbrook Island Wilderness lodge is situated at the northern end of the island and is quiet extraordinary. This is not a resort for those looking for party's and group activities. Here you need to be a bit fit as just accessing the accommodation will mean many stairs to climb. The accommodation units themselves are located along the hillside facing to the north over the ocean and are each individual tree houses nestled into the hillside and serviced by airial walkways and stairs cut into the rock face. Some of the units even use parts of the natural rock for their internal walls. Each of the units is private and overlooks a sensational view over the headland and the beach. The main lodge at the resort is open sided to allow the breezes to flow through and ensure that the view is not blocked. There is a spacious restaurant area, reception, lounge and bar. It is of open plan timber pole construction, in keeping with the landscape and built in the island style.
Mostly, Hinchinbrook Island is a tropical wilderness with sensational scenery. It is easy to get to and hard to forget once you have experienced its superb beauty.
