Although Jindabyne is not a ski destination in its own right, it serves as an accommodation and entertainments base for thousands of skiers visiting the New South Wales ski fields every year. Many of the resorts provide on snow accommodation, however many people prefer to stay in Jindabyne and travel to a different ski field every day for their skiing and snowboarding holiday. There is a huge amount of accommodation on offer. Jindabyne is located at the foot of the Snowy Mountains and on the shores of Lake Jindabyne. This is a man made lake which was constructed as part of the Snowy Mountains hydro electrical scheme. It is well stocked with trout and is a popular destination for sports fishermen. The lake also provides a magnificent setting for much of the accommodation which lies along its shores.
Jindabyne is within easy driving reach of the three main ski resorts. Mt Selwyn is the furthest but a great destination if you want something a little smaller and quieter. Perisher Valley is a short drive through the National Park and there are ample parking areas. You will need to pay an access fee when you enter the park. Thredbo is an easy drive and on the way you will pass the ski tube where you can take a ride to the ski resort of your choice. The parking here is free. There are also shuttle bus services from Jindabyne to the ski fields.
Jindabyne has a great choice of accommodation with hotels, apartments, motels and backpacker hostels making up the main supply. The town is full of restaurants, cafes and nightclubs so the après ski scene here is fantastic. In the summer months, Jindabyne attracts lots of bushwalkers and fishermen wanting to trek through the high country of the Kosciuszko National Park or go chasing trout in the local rivers and empoundments.
If you are planning to a ski or fishing holiday in Australia, then Jindabyne is a great destination.
