Katherine lies just over three hours drive to the south of Darwin and on the southern extremity of the Kakadu National Park. It also lies on the north south rail connection between Adelaide and Darwin and is close to the magnificent Katherine Gorge or Nitmiluk national park as it is known to the local Aborigines. Katherine provides accommodation and tourist facilities for those visitors coming to the region to see this fantastically beautiful region. There is a shortage of accommodation in Katherine as local tour companies now own most of the motels and use them to accommodate their tour groups, so if you are not on an organised tour, be sure to book well in advance.
Tours of the Katherine Gorge region can be organised in Katherine itself and it is only a short drive to the information center located at the entrance to the national park, where you can buy souvenirs and arrange to join a tour group.
