The north coast of New South Wales is one of the states premier holiday destinations. This region features some of the best beaches in Australia and some truly spectacular coastal scenery. The hinterland regions are filled with towering eucalypt forests, fantastic wildlife and beautiful National Parks. The north coast region starts at Tweed Heads at its northern end which is right on the Queensland border and adjoining the fabulous Gold Coast. It extends south to Port Macquarie. All along the way are dozens of small beachside fishing villages interspersed with major tourist towns.
Tweed Heads is a popular tourist town. It is really the southern extremity of the Gold Coast and it has lots of new holiday resorts to stay at. The Tweed River enters the ocean here and there is great offshore or estuary fishing. There is a local surf club and several great surfing beaches. Tweed heads also has several excellent golf courses and an excellent shopping plaza. A short drive south will take you to Kingscliff and Byron Bay. Several new beachside resorts here have really put Kingscliff on the holiday map. Salt Beach, here is claimed by the locals to be the best beach in Australia and they are not far wrong. It is a great place for a short break. Byron Bay is a little further south and it lies on the most easterly point of the Australian mainland. Byron Bay is a famous surfing destination and the most popular coastal tourist town in New South Wales.
Yamba lies on the estuary of the Clarence River and is a magnificent example of a quiet beachside holiday town. The fishing and boating is fantastic and the beaches are beautiful. Angourie beach at Yamba is one of the icons of the Australian surfing scene. South of Yamba is the major coastal city of Coffs Harbour. It lies at the center of a major agricultural and commercial fishing region.
There is a great boat harbour which is always filled with fishing trawlers and passing yachts. The city has lots of tourist infrastructure and plenty of accommodation and beachside resorts. The hinterland here including the Dorrigo area is absolutely spectacular with massive forests, mountain passes and spectacular views.
Nambucca Heads is also a popular tourist town and many families have been returning here for generations for their annual holidays. It is also located on the beachfront and on a river estuary and the fishing and surfing here is legend. Port Macquarie is another major town at the southern end of the north coast. It lies on the estuary of the Hastings River which provides port facilities for a large commercial fishing fleet. The city has five major beaches and plenty of holiday accommodation including many new resorts.
