The South coast of New South Wales is one of the most picturesque places in the nation. The coastal plain is one of Australia's most fertile farming regions and the coast itself has some of the country's best beaches and coastal scenery. There are a number of city's and towns along the coast that have such spectacular beauty that tourist are drawn to the region like a magnet. The hinterland climbs into the Great Dividing Range and there are places where mountain passes climb through spectacular eucalyptus forests that are alive with the unique Australian wildlife.
If you are travelling south from Sydney, take the road through the Royal National Park and Stanwell Tops. The coastal section of this road is awesome and the view from some of the lookouts is truly spectacular. Further south is the city of Wollongong and its harbour. This is a major steel making town but still has great surfing beaches and excellent accommodation choices. As you travel south from Wollongong you pass through many smaller coastal towns. Each has its own spectacular beach and beautiful rocky headlands at each end. Almost all have their own surf clubs and the beaches are fully patrolled. Kiama is the first of these and is famous for its blowhole situated on the rocky headland. Nowra is a little further down the road and just as pretty as the others.
Jervis Bay and the town of Huskisson is next. The bay is a beautiful natural harbour and there are lots of boating activites on offer. The fishing here is fantastic and many families return here every year for school holidays and the like. Local tours include dolphin and whale watching. All along this coastline you will find great places to stay and there are some beautiful resorts and spectacular golf courses. South of Huskisson is the towns of Batemans Bay, Ulladulla, Narooma, Bermagui, Bega, Merimbula and Eden. Eden has an interesting history which included a whaling station. The whaling museum here is a must see to find out about the local history and folk law. These South Coast destinations are all interesting and beautiful in their own right and you will need a few days to explore the region and see them all. This is an ideal piece of coastline to see on a campervan or motor home holiday staying in the plentiful caravan parks that are in every town in the region.
If you are planning to take a holiday to Australia, in the near future, then you must include the South Coast of New South Wales in your travels.
