The Hunter Valley region of New South Wales has everything from giant industrial cities through to the Hunter valley which is one one of the most famous wine growing region in the world and on to magnificent coastal resort towns. The heart of the Hunter region is the industrial city of Newcastle. This is one of Australia’s largest cities and it has grown as the largest steel making city in the country. It has huge port facilities and is a major export center for coal from the nearby Hunter Valley Coal mining industry. The city are has become more cosmopolitan over the last few generations and now has great shopping plazas and plenty of good restaurants and cafes. Inland from Newcastle is the Hunter Valley. This is one of Australia's premier wine growing districts and the quality of the wines produced here is legend. There are now hundreds of cellar doors throughout the valley ranging from small boutique wineries through to industry giants with thousands of acres under vines. The Hunter Valley has become a leading tourist destination with many great resorts located between the wineries and it is a really popular weekend destination for Sydney siders looking for a place to take a short break and unwind. The Hunter valley is also a popular race horse breeding area and the region around Scone has many top of the range stables. The leading Emirates stables are located here.

The best seaside parts of the Hunter Valley region are at Port Stephens. This is a place where many small villages have grown together around a magnificent harbour. Places like Nelson Bay, Corlette, LemonTree Passage, Soldiers Point, Hawkes Nest, Shoal Bay and Tea Gardens all have a fantastic holiday atmosphere. Here the boating is fantastic with all weather access from the open ocean and lots of quiet coves and bays for boaties to relax with their families. The ocean beaches are also fantastic and places like Shoal bay are great places to stay. Port Stephens has some fantastic resorts and accommodation so it is a fantastic place to stop over for a day or a week.
